Island of Dolls
- Spine chilling dolls
“Listen to them, the dolls of the night. What music they make!
Hey, did you know that dolls in the process of being made look like people in the process of being unmade? A Jump scare in a horror movie might make you spill your popcorn. A Monster brought to life via special effects might send shivers down your spine. But what does it take to truly get under your skin? If you have watched films like ‘Annabelle’, and ‘Chucky series’ you may have witnessed how frightful dolls can be on screen. But are you aware that there exists a real place with horrifying dolls, which is a major tourist attraction, where Island of dolls in Mexico has been the ghastly horrible and harrowing place. The Island of Dolls, located in the channels of Xochimilco, south of the center of Mexico City. Is a chinampa of the Lagoon of Teshuilo and one of the main attractions of the channels. Broken and deteriorated dolls of various styles and colors are found all over the island, originally placed by the former owner of the island. This place is known to the locals as "Isla de las Munecas" as their translated to english as 'Island of dolls'. A Creepy island with thousands of dolls strung up by a hermit preacher has become an attraction terrified tourists flock to every year.
Get into the fearsome finding :
“To live is to be haunted.”
Mexicans are very superstitious and few are willing to bring you there. The Island of Dolls is located an hour and a half from the Embarcadero Cuemanco. The only way to get to it is through Trajinera. Most rowers are willing to transport people to the island, but some refuse because of superstition. The journey, which lasts approximately one hour, includes a tour of the Ecological Area, the Ajolote Museum, the Apatlaco Canal, Teshuilo Lagoon and Isla de la Llorona. In addition to hundreds of dolls placed everywhere, the island also contains a small museum with some local newspaper articles on the island and the previous owner. There is a shop and three rooms, one of which seems to have been used as a bedroom. In this room is the first doll that Julian collected, as well as Agustinita, his favorite doll. Some of the visitors place offerings around this doll in exchange for miracles and blessings, some others change their clothes and give them maintenance as a form of worship.
Why is Island of doll unique :
“ Everyone knew that all islands were worlds unto themselves, that to come to an island was to come to another world.”
But that is what islands are for, they are places where different destinies can meet and intersect in the full isolation of time. The Island of Dolls is not a natural island, but an artificial one. It is a chinampa, an agricultural innovation developed by the Pre - coloumbian Mesoamericans in the Valley of Mexico. The Island of Dolls is located on the Teshuilo Lake, in the canals of Xochimilco, one of the 16 boroughs of Mexico City. The spooky site was never meant to become a tourist attraction. The Island of Dolls is a site of particular tourist interest, and takes approximately 2 hours to navigate to the island by boat, with many visitors bringing their own dolls to hang on the island. The Original dolls of the Island of Dolls were often found in the canal; rubbish sites; or given to Barrera in exchange for his farm produce. In 2001, Barrera, who inhabited the Island of Dolls for about fifty years, drowned in the canal, supposedly in the same spot as the legendary girl had drowned years prior, and it is possible it was a deliberate act, so that he could join the girl’s spirit. The original dolls of the Island of Dolls were often found in the canal; rubbish sites; or given to Barrera in exchange for his farm produce.
Hidden mysterious behindwoods :
It is silent... you may be on your own, but you are not alone. Dozens of decapitated heads sway slightly in the gentle breeze, watching your every move. Even though we tend to associate dolls with pretty looks, the dolls in the Island of Dolls are in no way a pleasant sight to watch. The story of the Island of Dolls begins in the 1950s. At that time, there was a man by the name of Julian Santana Barrera, who decided to live his life as a recluse. He left his wife and family and moved to the island to live in peace. Julian found a little girl drowned in mysterious circumstances while he was not able to save her life. Shortly thereafter, Julian saw a floating doll near the canals. Most probably, the doll belonged to the girl.He picked up the doll and hung it to a tree, as a way of showing respect and support the spirit of the girl. While on the island, Santana Barrera alleged that he was haunted by the ghost of a little girl who drowned in the nearby canal. He claimed to have heard the tormented cries of the girl and the sound of her footsteps in the night. Some believe that that a girl did drown in the canal and that Santana Barrera found her body but when he did it was too late and he forever was tormented by the fact that he couldn’t save her. But others are of the opinion that this incident never happened and that it was merely a figment of a pure imagination. Locals have often commented on Santana being haunted by the spirit of the dead girl and those who knew him well often spoke of his transformation into a strange man with a weird character. The dolls hung on the island appear quite creepy with some dolls lacking one or more limbs or others with decapitated heads and gouged eyes.
Many of the dolls have torn dresses or are completely exposed, have mud, straw, molds covering their surface or have spiders and other insects making their home in their hollow insides. Since Don Julian's death, the island has become a tourist attraction. His nephew is now the caretaker of the island. But in 2001 Don Julian's died body was found by his nephew as how the small girl was drowned in the lake. But report has been clearly majestred as heart attack. After Julian's death his family decided to transform completely into an island, and still now the tourist would bring dolls and hang it over. Walking between severed heads, dolls without eyes, heads, and plastic bodies are really disturbing: a few minutes here you will soon begin to be afraid of your steps on the dry branches. You can even decide to stay on the island for the night at your own risk. Since the death of Julian, the island has become very famous and has even been featured in many articles and even TV shows.Although the action of Don Julian was innocent and even admirable, it ended up being portrayed as a real nightmarish destination. Soulless eyes follow visitors as they visit the small island.
Fascinating facts :

. Some stories say that he was found drowned in the canal in the same manner as the dead girl.
